Brinker International announced on August 8, 2007 that it would begin exploring a buyer for the 230 company owned stores. On August 18, 2008, Brinker announced that a majority stake in the chain would be sold to a unit of Golden Gate Capital, making it the first of Brinker's core brands to be sold.
Since 2004 it has cast off the Rockfish Seafood Grill, Corner Bakery Cafe and Big Bowl Asian Kitchen brands.
Currently the biggest Romano's Macaroni Grill restaurant is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
