History
When Raceway Park opened in 1965, a local newspaper said its "isolated location, bordered by acres and acres of untouched woodland makes it ideal for the noise-making business of the science of speed". On the premises there is an adjacent kart track, motocross, parking lot road course and an 1/8th mile drag strip for Junior Dragster racing as well.
1,000 Foot Drag Racing
Englishtown is directly responsible for the development of 1,000 foot drag racing. A fatal crash at the 2008 NHRA RProCare Rx Supernationals June 19-22 during the final round of qualifying led to the demise of the quarter-mile drag race, and the development of 1,000 foot drag racing.
On June 21, 2008, Scott Kalitta, in the DHL Toyota Solara, was traveling at over 300 MPH when the body of the car exploded.The car could not slow down, hitting the sand trap at the end of the course, then flew through the safety net, and into the ESPN2 camera boom, killing the driver.
In the aftermath of the crash, fellow driver Tony Pedregon criticized the track's short shutdown area, as there is a road next to the border of the track.
